Vedic & Numerology-Guided Naming
The Moon shifts Nakshatra during the day. Time + location gives the exact birth star.
Nakshatra calculation uses astronomical Moon longitude approximation. For births near a Nakshatra boundary, the exact birth time and location are essential — consult a Vedic astrologer for precision. The best name is one your family loves.
How It Works
Choosing a baby name is one of the most meaningful decisions a family makes. Across many cultures, the sounds and structure of a name are considered carefully — not just for how they sound, but for what they represent. This free calculator uses two traditional frameworks — Nakshatra (birth star) analysis and numerology — to help families find names that feel right and carry cultural significance.
A Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions in Vedic astrology, each spanning 13.33 degrees of the ecliptic. The Moon passes through all 27 Nakshatras roughly every 27 days. Your child's Nakshatra — also called their birth star — is determined by the Moon's exact position at the moment of birth. Each Nakshatra is further divided into four padas (quarters), and each pada prescribes a specific syllable. Starting a child's name with their Nakshatra syllable is a longstanding tradition believed to create a meaningful connection between the name and the birth star.
The calculator uses Brown's lunar longitude approximation — an astronomical formula that computes the Moon's tropical longitude for any given date and time. The longitude is then mapped to the corresponding Nakshatra (each occupying 13.33 degrees) and pada (each occupying 3.33 degrees). When a birth time is provided along with the timezone, the calculation accounts for the Moon's movement during the day. Without a birth time, the tool samples the Moon's position across the day and shows all possible Nakshatras with their approximate time windows.
Numerology assigns a numeric value to each letter of the alphabet. The sum of all letter values in a name, reduced to a single digit (or master number 11, 22, 33), is called the Expression number. A child's Life Path number — derived from their date of birth — represents key traits in numerological tradition. When the Expression number of a name is traditionally compatible with the Life Path number, the name is considered well-aligned. This calculator checks compatibility across three systems: Pythagorean (Western), Chaldean (ancient Mesopotamian), and Vedic (Indian).
The Moon sign (Rashi) is the zodiac sign the Moon occupies at birth. Each Rashi has a ruling planet, and each planet has friendly, neutral, and hostile relationships with other planets. When a name starts with a syllable governed by a Nakshatra whose ruling planet is traditionally friendly to the child's Rashi ruler, the name is considered to have lunar harmony in Vedic tradition. This tool checks this planetary relationship for every name suggestion and every name you check manually.
Every name — whether AI-generated or entered manually — is evaluated on three dimensions: Nakshatra syllable alignment (does the name start with a recommended sound?), Moon sign harmony (is the name's planetary association compatible with the child's Rashi?), and numerological compatibility (does the name's Expression number align with the child's Life Path?). Each dimension is scored independently, explained in plain language, and expandable so you can understand the reasoning.
Each Nakshatra prescribes four syllables — one per pada (quarter). The practice of selecting a name based on these syllables is a longstanding tradition observed across many communities. Below is the complete reference.

The birth time significantly improves accuracy. The Moon moves through a Nakshatra in roughly one day, so without a time, the Moon could have been in one of two Nakshatras. When no time is provided, the calculator shows all possible Nakshatras for that day with approximate time windows so you can confirm. For births near a Nakshatra boundary, consulting a Vedic astrologer with the exact birth time and location is recommended.
Tradition strongly recommends it, but it is guidance, not a rule. Many families choose a name they love and use the Nakshatra syllable as a formal first name (used in ceremonies and official documents) while calling the child by a different name daily. The most important thing is that the family feels good about the name. This tool helps you find names where both the traditional alignment and the personal appeal come together.
Yes. The naming ceremony traditionally references the child's Nakshatra and corresponding syllables. This calculator provides both. The birth star card shows the Nakshatra, pada, ruling planet, element, Moon sign, and Sun sign — information commonly referenced during the ceremony. A priest or family elder should be consulted for complete ceremonial guidance specific to your tradition.
The calculator evaluates names across three systems simultaneously. Pythagorean numerology (the most common Western system) assigns sequential numbers 1-9 to letters A-Z. Chaldean numerology (from ancient Mesopotamia) assigns numbers based on phonetic qualities rather than sequence, and considers 9 a special number not assigned to any letter. Vedic numerology follows the Indian mathematical tradition. Each system may give a name a different Expression number — the tool shows the best-case compatibility across all three.
